The apple falls because of the javascript function which iteratively sets the top position of the apple to the branch. Is there something specific about this being 'relative'? I think it certainly suits Google's design of the homepage, but this could've been easily done by setting position absolute.
Btw, also realised that in your screengrab, the apple actually falls midway and rolls over (in my browsers, IE and FF, they drop to the bottom of the text links and rolls over horizontally.) What's the browser you are using?
